Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated and ambitious Assistant Accountant to join our finance team based in South Africa and take ownership of the day-to-day bookkeeping, reconciliations, and month-end support across the group. As we bring our finance operations in-house from our current outsourced provider, you will own the bookkeeping piece of that transition - keeping our ledgers accurate, timely and audit ready as we scale.
This is a brilliant opportunity for someone early in their finance career who has solid bookkeeping foundations, is confident and is excited about the pace and variety of working in a multi-entity SaaS group. You will own the transactional bookkeeping and support the wider finance cycle - month-end close, VAT, intercompany, and payroll posting - across our four UK entities.
If you have a finance background, a high attention to detail, and a genuine can-do attitude, we would love to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Day-to-day bookkeeping
Maintain accurate accounting records in Xero across all group entities.
Process expense claims and credit card transactions.
Perform daily and weekly bank reconciliations across all operating, payroll, and FX accounts.
Manage the accounts payable cycle: bill entry, approvals, supplier statement reconciliations, and twice-monthly payment run.
Manage the accounts receivable cycle: monitor aged debt.
Reconcile Stripe, GoCardless and any other payment gateway or merchant account to Xero - including timing differences, payout fees, and refunds.
Reconcile credit card statements line-by-line to Xero postings.
Process refunds, credit notes, and write-offs with the appropriate approval evidenced.
Maintain multi-currency bookkeeping: post FX gains/losses, run month-end revaluations and reconcile foreign-currency bank accounts.
Maintain supplier and customer master data, including verifying bank details before any payment goes out.
Month-end reporting support
Your day-to-day bookkeeping feeds directly into the month-end close and the management accounts. You support that process by:
Closing off the day-to-day bookkeeping cleanly each month - bank, AP, AR, payment gateway, and credit card reconciliations all up to date.
Pulling together balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules from the bookkeeping records, for the Financial Controller to review.
Checking the AP, AR and fixed asset sub-ledgers agree to the GL control accounts as part of closing off each month and flagging any variances to the Financial Controller.
Keeping the supporting documentation behind the bookkeeping - reconciliations, working papers, approvals - filed in the group's standard format, evidenced, and dated, so the records are audit-ready year-round.
Preparing routine month-end inputs from the bookkeeping records - accruals, prepayments, depreciation schedules, fixed asset register update etc.
Comparing intercompany balances across the four entity ledgers, flagging any mismatches to the Financial Controller to resolve.
Process and additional tasks
Maintain clean digital filing in Xero and our document storage.
Look for ways to improve, automate, and simplify finance processes.
Be a positive, collaborative member of the finance team and support colleagues across the group when needed.
Willing to assist with ad hoc tasks across the group.
Skills and Qualifications
Required:
A completed bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field.
Current or in-progress professional membership with a recognised accounting or finance body (SAICA, SAIPA, CIMA, ACCA or equivalent).
Demonstrated ability to run end-to-end bookkeeping in a prior role, including full AP and AR cycles and bank reconciliations.
A solid understanding of how bookkeeping supports the month-end close, including how AP, AR, and other sub-ledgers reconcile to the GL.
Meticulous attention to detail and strong numerical accuracy, with the discipline to keep records consistently clean across multiple entities.
Excellent organisation skills - you can manage your own workload across multiple entities and deadlines.
A genuine can-do attitude, demonstrated through your previous work experience - with clear examples of where you have been proactive, taken ownership, and rolled up your sleeves to get things done in a fast-moving environment.
Desirable:
Hands-on experience with Xero - comfortable navigating the platform day-to-day and confident with reconciliations, journals, and reports.
Experience working within a SaaS or technology business.
Exposure to multi-entity or group accounting, including intercompany transactions.
Familiarity with subscription billing, deferred revenue, and recurring revenue concepts (MRR / ARR).
Benefits and Compensation
Benefits include:
18 days paid annual leave (plus SA public holidays), plus 1 additional day leave for each year of service up to 26 days maximum.
30 days paid sick leave over a 3-year period.
Pension scheme (5% EE & 5% ER).
Medical Aid (through Discovery Health).
Mobile & Wellbeing Allowances.
Flexible Working.
Learning & Development Opportunities.
